Critical Mass 2020 Port Hope Soundscapes Project

Working with app developers, artists and local storytellers, Critical Mass aims to animate local cultural and heritage spaces in Port Hope with immersive sound art.

Port Hope Soundscapes will lead participants along a selected walkthrough of Port Hope’s public outdoor spaces and existing cultural assets — some well known and some to be discovered. Spaces along the walk will be animated through sound art delivered through geo-triggered site specific audio files to individual participants and played from an app on their smartphones.

Using technology that’s literally in everyone’s hands, Critical Mass aims to connect more people with Port Hope’s identity — providing a tool for future story sharing and collaborative forms of meaning-making, increasing the number of voices heard.

ABOUT PORT HOPE SOUNDSCAPES

Working with app developers, artists and local storytellers, Critical Mass aims to animate local cultural and heritage spaces in Port Hope with immersive sound art.

Artists will be invited to work with the community to co-curate compelling, art-forward interpretations of space (oral, historical, Indigenous, arts-based, and more).

Our Soundscapes app will provide a cultural roadmap for locals and newcomers to share Port Hope’s identity and shape its future story telling — expanding typical narrative reach and contribution of rural stories in Ontario’s developing identity.

Using technology that’s literally in everyone’s hands, we aim to connect more people with Port Hope’s identity — providing a tool for future story sharing and collaborative forms of meaning-making, increasing the number of voices heard.

ABOUT CRITICAL MASS

Critical Mass: A Centre for Contemporary Art brings contemporary art to our community for all to experience because we believe art stirs our feelings and challenges how we see the world and our place within it.

Our mission for the 2020 Port Hope Soundscapes project is to provide socially-engaged sound artists with an opportunity to play an active role in our community — creating art experiences that will help shape the cultural vibrancy of Port Hope.

COVID-19 CONSIDERATIONS

The COVID-19 global pandemic has posed a worldwide challenge to how we as humans physically connect with and maintain relationships with each other. Humans are social creatures, but COVID-19 has challenged the physicality of how we live in our communities. How do we maintain our sense of belonging and connection, with one another while being physically kept apart?

Critical Mass wants to encourage the people of Port Hope to explore the places around their neighbourhoods; to consider new ways of learning and sharing and experiencing stories (whether they be verbal or non-verbal narratives) about our communities; and encourage people to embrace a new digital way to participate in their community.

Port Hope soundscapes can be experienced by individuals, yet still connect us as a whole.
